Sherburne County is nestled in the eastern center of Minnesota along the Mississippi River and is part of the swiftly growing Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area.  The county was founded on February 25, 1856 and derives its name from Moses Sherburne, who was an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the Minnesota Territory during the 1850s.  It’s the second fastest growing county in the state of Minnesota, and as of 2010 estimates, the county is home to around 90,600 people.  Projections show that the county will continue seeing a rapid increase in residential growth, especially in its rural areas.

 

Sherburne County real estate can be located in six cities, ten townships, and five unincorporated communities.  Elk River is its largest city, as well as its county seat.  The county is accessible by U.S. Highways 10 and 169 and Minnesota State Highways 24, 25, 101 and 301.  Superb rail services are available to businesses along U.S. Highway 10.  The main line of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, which spans from Chicago to Seattle, traverses through the county.  Amtrak also runs on this line, though there are no stops within Sherburne County.  Northstar Commuter Rail, the state’s first commuter rail line, offers service from downtown Minneapolis to Big Lake with a connecting coach bus service between Big Lake and St. Cloud.  Connections to St. Cloud are currently in the planning process.  The county has four airports within its boundaries, located in St. Cloud, Princeton, Clear Lake, and Big Lake.
